Local Sports

NASCAR fans will want to check out Langley Speedway, which has a variety of racing fun and hosts the Pro Series East and the local Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

The College of WIlliam and Mary, one of the few US universities older than the USA, fields The the William and Mary Tribe athletics program, with baseball, basketball, football, cross country, track & field, soccer, gymnastics, swimming and diving, golf, tennis, field hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball teams.

The Hampton Pirates represent Hampton University, with basketball, bowling, football, cross country, track & field, golf, tennis, softball, and volleyball teams.

Many of the local parks have sports fields, and sports complexes are fairly easy to locate; the odds are that whatever your sport, there's a local team or league.

Golfing is popular in the Hampton area, and Langley has the usual share of golf courses.

Hunting: The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries regulates hunting in the state, and licenses for bear, deer, elk, turkey, crow, groundhog, grouse, quail, pheasants, rabbit, squirrel, dove, woodcock, snipe, rail, goose, and teal. Trappable furbearers include bobcat, coyote, fox, opossum, skunk, and raccoon.

Fishing in Virginia (licensed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries) includes bass, crappie, bluegill, flier, sunfish, warmouth, perch, pike, trout, catfish, shad, carp, gar, and drum. Check regulations carefully; certain species of herring are illegal. Marine fishing (which is handled by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission) includes amberjack, american eel, various kinds of drum, sea bass, catfish, bluefish, cobia, trout, groupers, mackerel, scup, certain kinds of shark, shad, and spadefish. The Virginia coast, bays, rivers, and other waterways are extensive, and the area has a lot of excellent sailing and boating.
