The 1st Fighter Wing was activated in August 1947 at March Field, California, under the Twelfth Air Force, Tactical Air Command (TAC). During World War I, the unit collected over 200 kills and was known as the 1st Pursuit Organization and Training Center. The wing earned 3 Distinguished Unit Citations in World War II and flew thousands of missions in the P-38 after being rebranded as the 1st Fighter Group. It was not until Operations Desert Shield and Storm during the early 1990s that the wing, known then as the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, was once again active in combat. They became the first to take over Saudi Arabian air space before any other American unit and continued to fly thousands of sorties and combat hours throughout the operations. The unit was finally redesignated the 1st Fighter Wing in 1991. After involvement with Operation Iraqi Freedom over Southeast Asia in 2003, the unitís 27th Fighter Squadron was the first in the Air Force to operate F-22s in 2005.
